As a designer who cut her teeth in the punk scene, I dedicate this anthemic song (which ironically helped encourage 12/13 year old me to take things and make them my own rather than just accept what was given & what everyone else was already doing) in response to all of the freshly scrubbed & primly posh, celebrity-filled “Punk Fashion” MetGala red carpet pictures I’ve been seeing tonight.

Punk ≠ society’s freshly scrubbed “elite” parading around in safely diluted “translations” of #PunkFashion decades later.

The subtle indentations you see in this street are the remains of five foundation stones which served to hold the foundation of the Paris guillotine (1851-1899) which once stood at the entrance to the now destroyed Prison de la Roquette.

I have a beautiful burgundy velvet cloak from Kambriel with the original Atrocities label, and I will keep it forever and ever.

This image/layout is from an incredibly limited edition poster made back in 1994. The Atrocities logo is one I painted by hand from a combination of 12th and 15th century letter styles I found examples of in some old library books. The skirt is my crushed velvet triple tiered skirt ~ and it’s original catalogue page was entitled “Blood Stained Tiers” (a wordplay on Rozz Williams’ “Bloodstained tears” lyrics from a Christian Death song).

This machine allows anyone to work for minimum wage for as long as they like. Turning the crank on the side releases one penny every 4.97 seconds, for a total of $7.25 per hour. This corresponds to minimum wage for a person in New York. This piece is brilliant on multiple levels, particularly as social commentary. Without a doubt, most people who started operating the machine for fun would quickly grow disheartened and stop when realizing just how little they’re earning by turning this mindless crank. A person would then conceivably realize that this is what nearly two million people in the United States do every day…at much harder jobs than turning a crank. This turns the piece into a simple, yet effective argument for raising the minimum wage.

Possible Aurora Borealis viewing in the United States Saturday evening (April 13 - which also happens to be my birthday!). I’ve still yet to see this, and truly hope to someday… Maybe if I find a high enough mountain top tomorrow night? ;)

Remember ~ even in good conditions, the aurora’s still a rarity to view & challenging to predict based on things like cloud cover & overall intensity and/or how widespread it is, but hopefully some lucky ones will catch a sight of this stunningly ethereal phenomenon!

Panera Cares Lets Customers Set The Price

Panera Bread, the nationwide restaurant chain, has opened a new “pay-what-you-can” cafe in downtown Boston, called Panera Cares.

The concept is simple: diners pay what they can afford. So if a meal normally costs $5.00, the customer can pay that price, a little more, or a little less.

Store ambassadors greet customers when they come in to explain how things work, but it can be a little confusing.

“I don’t even know what’s going on. I’m just hungry,” a befuddled customer named Javier said.

Here’s how it works: customers order their food, just like at a regular Panera, but then the cashier tells them the suggested price. Customers can decide how much to pay, and either put their money in a donation box, or tell the cashier how much to charge their credit card.

The Panera Bread Foundation has four other Panera Cares locations in St. Louis, Detroit, Portland, Oregon and Chicago, and the founder Ron Shaich says the system works because the people who can afford to pay more, often do.

“All they have is a responsibility to do the right thing. And you know what’s amazing? So many people do,” Shaich said.

The breakdown of what people pay is about 60-20-20: 60 percent of people pay the suggested price, 20 percent pay less, 20 percent pay more.

Since opening in January, the Panera Cares in Boston has been taking in slightly more than that national average.

Food Insecurity

Panera officials say the chain already donates about $100 million in food and cash a year. But Shaich wanted to become more involved in the issue of food insecurity – the 50 million Americans and one in four children who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

“This isn’t an issue of simply of homelessness,” Shaich said. “Twenty-five percent of people with food insecurity actually own their own homes, 24 percent are college grads. It’s endemic when you have a country that is 8 to 9 percent unemployment.”

It’s a job requirement that all of the employees at the Boston Panera Cares location understand the issue.

“We’ve all experienced food insecurity one way or another, either personally or we know someone is experiencing it,” said cashier Yetunde Bankole.

Panera Cares workers are also trained to deal with a population that is in need.

A “pay what you can” policy for food, as well as giving people in need a great opportunity to get some new job experience…

I visited the Panera Cares in Portland & I’d love to see more of these (from even more companies) throughout the land.

Stonehenge Behind the Scenes

For once a behind the scenes that actually features me! Kambriel, my daughter and I took a lovely day trip to the Maryhill Museum and swung by the inexplicable Stonehenge reproduction nearby. As silly as that may seem, once inside it gives the nice effect of a labyrinth.

“Inexplicable Stonehenge” is my favourite phrase of the day.

What a wonderful day we had… If only all shoots included a fabulous picnic lunch and exhibits ranging from chess sets, Théâtre de la Mode, and Rodin’s rather oddly chosen personification of “Despair”. It was so lovely that Sophia was able to come along, ~and~ was such a ninja at getting these behind the scenes shots!

What is interesting to me is that the week it was featured, I was on an all day photo shoot excursion with this very model (the otherworldly Kambriel) who I had not seen in over 2 years! I think on the 26th of March she may have been boarding a plane to fly out to here. Wacky!
